In 2025, a hundred and four thousand volunteers knocked on more than three million doors and helped elect Zohran Mamdani mayor of New York City. Turnout reached 41.6 percent, the highest in any city election in over half a century.

This volume studies the campaign from the inside. Its contributors (researchers, organizers, and members of the field operation they analyze) draw on embedded fieldwork, interviews, an original survey of volunteers, and previously unreleased campaign data to examine how the field program was built, how leadership was developed at scale, and what the case implies for the study and practice of democratic politics.
